The world's first osmotic power plant prototype opened in Norway

The world's first prototype of a power plant that utilizes osmosis to produce electric power was recently opened in Norway. It IS indeed a prototype, in the sense that it produces a rather limited amount of electric power, but a full scale plant is planned to be in place during the year 2015

You can see videos about it here

This is fascinating! It's a source of power which is continuously available, with no dependance on weather, daylight, etc.. I expect we'll see a lot more about it before long.

I have to say that I did not even think about this energy gradient in nature as a possible source of electric power before I read about his project. Wonder if there are any more such energy gradients out there that are part of natural processes, and can be harvested. I believe we will need all the available new sources of energy we can get our hands on in the next decades.

I would like to add something. The development of more efficient membranes for osmotic power plants will not only be beneficial to power production, but also to the reveres process. Since reverse osmosis is used to desalinate water, producing drinking water out of sea water. Please see these videos:

By the way, happy new year to everyone.

Here is another video about osmotic power. This one is produced in the Philippines:
